Visiting the Steve McCurry Icons exhibit

The Afghan Girl is possibly the most famous photograph ever taken. There are a few contestants for the title, but it is surely up there.
The photographer behind it is Steve McCurry. McCurry has a long ansd storied carreer documenting the world and the events happening in it. And has taken a lot of amazing photographs along the way. He has an almost uncanny ability to capture both the brutality and beauty of the world, and sometimes the beauty in the brutality. A lot of his pictures are astonishing while still being of dramatic or tragic events, which is probably what makes him so fascinating and the main reason for his fame.

Icons is an exhibit of over 100 of his photographs, and it of course includes The Afghan Girl, a photograph that helped change history, but also has had it’s fair share of controversy surrounding it, that may be a story I will cover some other day.

The exhibit also has my favorite McCurry picture, “Woman in Chand Baori stepwell” which as the title may imply is a picture of a Woman in the Chand Baori stepwell in Abhaneri, India.

If you ever have the chance to go see Icons (I saw it in Brussels, but I suspect it is a travelling exhibition) you should absoluty do so. I’m not gonna post a whole lot of the exhibit here as you need to go see it with your own eyes, but it absolutely has my recommendation.
